Charles Joseph Natoire — French, 1700–1777 — French Rococo

Charles Joseph Natoire was a French painter and decorator whose career intersected with that of François Boucher, his contemporary and rival within the orbit of the Rococo. Trained under Louis Galloche and François Lemoyne, he won the Prix de Rome in 1721 and absorbed the Italian decorative tradition during his years there. Natoire is best remembered for his cycle on the story of Psyche painted for the Hôtel de Soubise in Paris, an ensemble that exemplifies the lightness, mythological subject matter, and refined eroticism characteristic of the period. He worked extensively in tapestry design for the Beauvais and Gobelins manufactories, produced religious commissions, and from 1751 served as director of the French Academy in Rome, a post he held until his death. His drawings, particularly his red-chalk landscape studies of the Roman campagna, are now considered among his most enduring contributions.

Reproductions of Charles Joseph Natoire's work from Cutler Miles are produced in our Pacific Northwest studio on archival cotton-rag paper using pigment-based inks rated for over a century of color stability. Available in standard reproduction sizes; custom sizing available on request.
