Edward John Poynter — British, 1836–1919 — British Academic Classicism

Edward John Poynter was a leading figure in late Victorian academic painting, known for meticulously researched scenes of antiquity rendered with archaeological precision. Trained in Paris under Charles Gleyre, he absorbed the discipline of French academic drawing and brought it to bear on subjects drawn from biblical narrative, ancient Egypt, and classical Greece and Rome. His large-scale compositions, such as Israel in Egypt and Faithful unto Death, established his reputation in the 1860s and 1870s.
