Alfred Henry Maurer — American, 1868–1932 — American Modernism
Alfred Henry Maurer was among the first American painters to absorb the lessons of European modernism and carry them home. The son of Currier & Ives lithographer Louis Maurer, he trained academically in New York before moving to Paris in 1897, where his early Whistlerian figure paintings won him recognition at the Salon. After encountering Matisse and the Fauves around 1905, he abruptly shifted course, working in heightened color and flattened form.
