Albert Edelfelt was among the first Finnish painters to gain international recognition, central to the generation that established a distinct Finnish artistic identity in the late nineteenth century. Trained in Antwerp and Paris, he absorbed the plein-air naturalism of Bastien-Lepage while keeping his subjects rooted in Finnish life: coastal villages along the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki society, and scenes from national history.
