Boat At Low Tide At Fecamp

Claude Monet — French, 1840–1926 — French Impressionism

Monet was the central figure of French Impressionism and the movement's most committed exponent of painting from direct observation. The 1872 canvas Impression, Sunrise gave the movement its name. Working primarily out of doors, he pursued the changing effects of light and atmosphere with unusual persistence, often returning to the same subject across hours, seasons, and years — the haystacks near Giverny, the facade of Rouen Cathedral, the poplars along the Epte.
