Jean Frédéric Schall was a French painter who worked in the late Rococo manner during the closing decades of the Ancien Régime and into the Napoleonic era. Born in Strasbourg, he trained in Paris and developed a specialty in small-scale gallant subjects: amorous couples, dancers, and elegantly dressed women in pastoral or boudoir settings. His handling is fluid and his palette light, with a finish indebted to Fragonard and Boucher.
