Briton Riviere was a British painter best known for narrative compositions featuring animals, particularly dogs, often placed in dramatic or sentimental situations alongside human or biblical figures. Born in London to a family of artists of Huguenot descent, he was educated at Cheltenham College and Oxford, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from a young age, becoming a Royal Academician in 1881.
