Edward William Cooke trained first as an engraver under his father, George Cooke, producing detailed botanical and architectural plates before turning to oil painting in the 1830s. His marine subjects drew on close observation: he sketched extensively along the Dutch and English coasts, studied rigging with the precision of a shipwright, and was known for the technical accuracy of his vessels and weather.
