Carl Holsøe is best known for quiet domestic interiors painted in the tradition of seventeenth-century Dutch masters, particularly Vermeer and de Hooch. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and later under Peder Severin Krøyer, he formed a close artistic kinship with Vilhelm Hammershøi and Peter Ilsted, with whom he is often grouped.
