Samuel Bough was a self-taught Scottish landscape painter known for atmospheric scenes of the Borders, the Clyde, and harbour towns along the Scottish coast. Born in Carlisle, the son of a shoemaker, he worked briefly as a scene painter in theatres in Manchester and Glasgow before settling in Edinburgh, where he established himself as one of the leading landscape artists of his generation.
