Arthur Frank Mathews — American, 1860–1945 — California Decorative Style / American Tonalism
Arthur Frank Mathews was a central figure in the development of a distinctly Californian art and design sensibility at the turn of the twentieth century. Trained in Paris at the Académie Julian, he absorbed the muted palette and classical figuration of French academic painting and the Symbolist current, then returned to San Francisco where he served as director of the California School of Design from 1890 to 1906.
