Amedeo Modigliani — Italian, 1884–1920 — École de Paris
Modigliani worked in Paris from 1906 until his death, occupying a singular position outside the major movements of his era. Trained in Italy with grounding in Renaissance painting, he developed a portrait style defined by elongated faces and necks, almond-shaped eyes often left blank, and a flattened, sculptural simplification of form influenced by his early work in stone carving and his study of African and Cycladic sculpture.
