Fernand Khnopff — Belgian, 1858–1921 — Belgian Symbolism

Fernand Khnopff was a leading figure of Belgian Symbolism and a founding member of Les XX, the avant-garde Brussels group that reshaped late nineteenth-century European art. Trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and the writings of Joséphin Péladan, he developed a hermetic visual language built around enigmatic female figures, hieratic stillness, and spaces drained of incident.
