Edgar Degas — French, 1834–1917 — French Impressionism
Degas occupies an unusual position within Impressionism: a founding member of the group who exhibited in seven of their eight exhibitions, yet one who rejected the label and resisted plein-air painting in favor of disciplined studio work. Trained in the academic tradition under a follower of Ingres, he retained a draftsman's commitment to line throughout his career.
