Ernst Ludwig Kirchner — German, 1880–1938 — German Expressionism
Kirchner was a founding member of Die Brücke, the Dresden group formed in 1905 that helped inaugurate German Expressionism. Trained as an architect, he turned to painting and printmaking, developing an angular, high-keyed style indebted to late Gothic woodcuts, Munch, and non-Western art he studied in ethnographic museums. His Berlin street scenes of 1913–1915, with their elongated figures and acid palette, are among the defining images of pre-war urban modernity.
