Bruce Crane — American, 1857–1937 — American Tonalism
Bruce Crane was a landscape painter associated with the second generation of the Hudson River School and, more centrally, with American Tonalism. Born in New York and trained in part under Alexander Helwig Wyant, he later studied in France, where exposure to the Barbizon painters shaped his mature direction. Crane settled at Bronxville and became closely linked with the Old Lyme art colony in Connecticut.
