John Ottis Adams was a central figure in the Hoosier Group, the circle of Indiana painters who brought a distinctly Midwestern sensibility to American Impressionism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Trained in London at the South Kensington School and later in Munich at the Royal Academy, Adams returned to Indiana and devoted his career to painting the landscape of the Whitewater Valley and the rivers and woodlands surrounding Brookville.
