William Romaine By Francis Cotes, R.A. By Francis Cotes, R.A.
Francis Cotes R.A. — English, 1726–1770 — English Rococo Portraiture
Francis Cotes was a leading English portraitist of the mid-eighteenth century, equally accomplished in pastel and oil. Trained in London under George Knapton, he built his early reputation on pastel portraits notable for their delicate handling and luminous flesh tones, before turning increasingly to oils in the 1760s. Cotes worked at the height of London's portrait trade, ranking alongside Reynolds and Gainsborough as one of the most sought-after painters of fashionable society.
