Paul Gustave Fischer — Danish, 1860–1934 — Danish Realism
Paul Gustave Fischer was a Danish painter best known for his depictions of Copenhagen street life at the turn of the twentieth century. The son of a Polish-Jewish lithographer, he trained briefly at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts before largely teaching himself through illustration work for Danish periodicals. His mature paintings document the modern city: shoppers along Strøget, crowds in public squares, bathers at Skagen and along the Øresund coast.
