Horace Vernet — French, 1789–1863 — French Romanticism
Horace Vernet was a French painter known principally for his battle scenes, military subjects, and Orientalist compositions. Born into a dynasty of painters—son of Carle Vernet and grandson of Claude-Joseph Vernet—he trained within the academic establishment and rose quickly through official channels, eventually serving as director of the French Academy in Rome from 1828 to 1834. He produced large-scale documentary canvases of Napoleonic and North African campaigns, traveling to Algeria several times to gather material.
