Aivazovsky was the foremost marine painter of the nineteenth-century Russian Empire and one of the most prolific seascape artists in Western art, producing an estimated six thousand works over his career. Born in Feodosia, Crimea, to an Armenian family, he trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg and traveled extensively in Italy, where his Bay of Naples scenes established his international reputation.
