Horace Pippin — American, 1888–1946 — American Folk / Self-Taught Modernism

Horace Pippin was a self-taught African American painter whose work occupies a singular place in twentieth-century American art. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, he served in the 369th Infantry Regiment during the First World War and sustained a wound to his right arm that permanently limited its use; he began painting in earnest in the late 1920s, guiding his right hand with his left.
