Theodore Clement Steele — American, 1847–1926 — American Impressionism / Hoosier Group
Theodore Clement Steele was the leading figure of the Hoosier Group, a circle of Indiana painters who brought Impressionist landscape practice to the American Midwest. After early portrait work in Indianapolis, Steele studied at the Royal Academy in Munich from 1880 to 1885, absorbing the tonal discipline of the Munich School before lightening his palette under the influence of plein-air practice.
