Walter Blackman — American, 1847–1928 — American Academic Realism

Walter Blackman was an American painter who spent much of his career in Paris, where he trained under Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts. Born in Chicago, he became part of the expatriate community of American artists working in France during the late nineteenth century. His work reflects the disciplined draftsmanship and polished finish characteristic of the French academic tradition, with subjects drawn largely from genre scenes and figural compositions.
