Max Ernst — German-French-American, 1891–1976 — Dada and Surrealism
Max Ernst was a central figure in both Dada and Surrealism, moving between Cologne, Paris, and later New York and Sedona, Arizona. Largely self-taught as a painter, he studied philosophy and psychology at Bonn before the First World War, an experience that shaped the unsettled imagery of his postwar work.
