Charles Ethan Porter — American, 1847–1923 — American Still Life Painting
Charles Ethan Porter was an African American painter known almost exclusively for still lifes, working in a tradition shaped by the Hudson River School milieu and later by French academic training. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he studied at the National Academy of Design in New York in the 1870s and traveled to Paris in the early 1880s, where he absorbed the looser brushwork and atmospheric effects of contemporary French painting.
