Fragonard was among the last and most fluent practitioners of the French Rococo, a painter whose loose, animated brushwork pushed the style toward something close to improvisation. Trained under Chardin and Boucher, he won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and spent formative years in Italy, absorbing the landscape tradition and the work of Tiepolo.
