Three Pears

Paul Cezanne — French, 1839–1906 — Post-Impressionism

Cézanne worked at the seam between Impressionism and the structural concerns that would define twentieth-century painting. Born in Aix-en-Provence, he trained briefly in Paris and exhibited with the Impressionists in the 1870s before retreating largely to the south of France, where he spent decades reworking a narrow set of subjects: the quarries and pine slopes around Mont Sainte-Victoire, bathers, card players, and still lifes of fruit on rumpled cloth.
