Nicolaes Maes Aka Nicolaes Maas — Dutch, 1634–1693 — Dutch Golden Age
Nicolaes Maes was a Dutch painter who trained in Rembrandt's Amsterdam studio in the early 1650s before returning to his native Dordrecht. His career divides clearly into two phases. During the 1650s he produced quiet domestic genre scenes—women at prayer, lacemakers, eavesdroppers on staircases—rendered in warm reds and deep browns that reflect Rembrandt's tonal influence.
