Jessie Willcox Smith was among the most prominent American illustrators of the early twentieth century, known for her tender depictions of children and domestic life. Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and at the Drexel Institute under Howard Pyle, she became part of the Philadelphia circle of women illustrators that included Violet Oakley and Elizabeth Shippen Green.
