Jules Breton — French, 1827–1906 — French Realism
Jules Breton was a French painter associated with the Realist tradition that emerged in mid-nineteenth-century France, though his work softened that movement's sharper edges with a lyrical, almost devotional treatment of rural labor. Born in Courrières in the Pas-de-Calais, he drew his lifelong subject matter from the agricultural communities of northern France, painting peasant women gleaning, harvesting, and returning from the fields.
