Erastus Salisbury Field — American, 1805–1900 — American Folk Art / Itinerant Portraiture
Erastus Salisbury Field was a self-taught New England portraitist who briefly studied with Samuel F. B. Morse in 1824 before returning to rural Massachusetts to work as an itinerant limner. For two decades he painted the merchants, ministers, and farm families of the Connecticut River Valley, producing flat, frontal likenesses with crisp linear contours and carefully observed costume detail.
