Daniel Maclise was an Irish-born painter who became one of the most prominent history painters of the Victorian era. Trained at the Cork School of Art and later at the Royal Academy in London, he was elected a full Royal Academician in 1840. Maclise built his reputation on large-scale historical and literary subjects, drawing frequently from Shakespeare, Irish legend, and British history.
