Dwight William Tryon was a leading figure in American Tonalism, known for restrained landscapes that emphasized atmosphere and quiet structure over incident. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he trained in Paris in the late 1870s under Charles-François Daubigny and Henri Harpignies, absorbing the influence of the Barbizon school before returning to the United States in 1881.
