The Rivals

John George Brown — American, 1831–1913 — American Genre Painting

John George Brown was an English-born American painter best known for sentimental genre scenes of New York City street children — bootblacks, newsboys, and flower sellers — rendered with technical precision and warm narrative appeal. Trained at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh before emigrating to the United States in 1853, he settled in New York and became a National Academician in 1863.
