Jan Steen was a prolific painter of the Dutch Golden Age, best known for genre scenes that depict domestic life with humor, narrative complexity, and gentle moral instruction. Born in Leiden and active in Haarlem, The Hague, Delft, and Leiden over the course of his career, he trained under Nicolaes Knüpfer and likely Adriaen van Ostade, and married into the family of landscape painter Jan van Goyen.
