John Roddam Spencer Stanhope worked at the periphery of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, closely associated with Edward Burne-Jones and G.F. Watts, the latter of whom he studied under as a young man. Born into a Yorkshire landowning family, he trained at Oxford and participated in the 1857 Oxford Union mural project alongside Rossetti, Morris, and Burne-Jones.
