Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait — American, 1819–1905 — American Sporting and Wildlife Painting
Born in Liverpool and largely self-taught at the Royal Manchester Institution, Tait emigrated to New York in 1850 and became the leading American painter of game animals and frontier hunting subjects in the mid-nineteenth century. He spent summers in the Adirondacks, working from direct observation of deer, ducks, grouse, and bear, and translated those studies into carefully finished oils notable for their anatomical precision and quiet woodland atmosphere.
