Edouard Manet — French, 1832–1883 — French Realism / Early Impressionism
Manet occupies a pivotal position between the realism of Courbet and the Impressionism he helped catalyze without fully joining. Working in Paris through the Second Empire and early Third Republic, he drew subjects from contemporary urban life — café-concerts, prostitutes, bullfights, bartenders — and rendered them with flattened tonal contrasts, abrupt brushwork, and frank, frontal compositions that disregarded academic finish.
