Gerard van Honthorst was a leading figure of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, a group of Dutch painters who absorbed Caravaggio's tenebrism during their travels to Rome in the early seventeenth century. His Roman years, roughly 1616 to 1620, earned him the nickname Gherardo delle Notti for his command of nocturnal scenes lit by candles, torches, or hidden sources.
