Louis Jean François Lagrenée, called Lagrenée the Elder, was a Parisian history painter trained under Carle Van Loo. He won the Prix de Rome in 1749 and spent formative years in Italy, absorbing the late Baroque and emerging classical taste he would carry through his career.
