Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was a self-taught American painter and cartoonist best known for a series of sixteen oil paintings commissioned around 1903 by the advertising firm Brown & Bigelow to promote cigars. Nine of these depict anthropomorphized dogs gathered around card tables, the group collectively known as Dogs Playing Poker.
