The Mourners
Evelyn De Morgan — British, 1855–1919 — British Symbolism / Late Pre-Raphaelite
Evelyn De Morgan was an English painter associated with the second generation of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, working in a style that drew equally from Botticelli, Burne-Jones, and the spiritualist and feminist currents of late Victorian England. Trained at the Slade School of Fine Art, she developed a body of work centered on allegorical and mythological subjects—figures of women in flowing drapery, often arranged in elongated, rhythmic compositions and rendered in luminous, jewel-toned color.
