Harry Roseland was a Brooklyn-born painter known for genre scenes depicting everyday life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He worked primarily in oil and watercolor, and is most associated with sympathetic portrayals of African American subjects in domestic settings — fortune tellers, tea readings, and quiet interior moments — painted with careful attention to gesture, fabric, and the play of natural light.
