Judith Leyster — Dutch, 1609–1660 — Dutch Golden Age
Judith Leyster was one of the few women admitted to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke during the Dutch Golden Age, registering as a master in 1633 and operating her own workshop with male apprentices. She painted genre scenes, portraits, and a small number of still lifes, favoring intimate domestic subjects—musicians, drinkers, children at play—rendered with a confident handling of artificial light that invites comparison to Frans Hals, in whose orbit she worked.
