Walter MacEwen was an American painter who spent most of his career in Europe, dividing his time primarily between Paris and the Netherlands. Born in Chicago, he trained at the Académie Julian under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre, absorbing the disciplined draftsmanship of late nineteenth-century French academic practice.
