Joos van Cleve was a leading painter of sixteenth-century Antwerp, registered as a master in the city's Guild of Saint Luke in 1511 and serving repeatedly as its dean. He ran one of the most productive workshops in the Low Countries, producing devotional panels, portraits, and large altarpieces for an international clientele.
