Fernand Cormon trained under Alexandre Cabanel and Eugène Fromentin before establishing himself at the Paris Salon with large-scale prehistoric and biblical scenes, of which Cain remains the best known. His ambitious archaeological reconstructions of early human life reflected the period's fascination with anthropology and natural history, and earned him commissions for decorative cycles in the Petit Palais and the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle.
