Description

The Gleaners

Jean Francois Millet — French, 1814–1875 — French Realism / Barbizon School

Millet was a central figure of the Barbizon School and one of the defining painters of nineteenth-century French Realism. Born to a peasant family in Gruchy, Normandy, he settled in 1849 in the village of Barbizon on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, where he remained for the rest of his life. His subject was rural labor — sowers, gleaners, shepherdesses, woodcutters — rendered with a gravity previously reserved for religious or historical painting.
