Louis Ritman was a Russian-born American painter associated with the second generation of American Impressionists who worked at Giverny in the years before the First World War. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and later in Paris, he settled into the Giverny circle around 1911, alongside Frederick Frieseke and Richard Miller, and became known for sunlit interior scenes and garden subjects featuring young women absorbed in quiet activity.
